She Sent Two Starving Mastiffs Across His Farm Road, Not Knowing What Catherine Had Already Seen

Chapter 1: Two Mastiffs Came Down the Gravel Road

The first mastiff hit the end of its leash hard enough to pull Elizabeth Wright one step off balance.

Then Elizabeth let more leather slide through her hand.

Catherine Harris had just climbed down from her tractor at the pasture gate. One boot was still on the gravel when the second dog lunged after the first, both animals coming down the narrow farm road with their heads low and their heavy shoulders rolling.

“Use the south entrance,” Elizabeth called from beside her pickup.

Catherine did not move.

There was no useful south entrance. There was an old cattle track that turned to mud after rain and ended on the wrong side of the lower pasture. Elizabeth knew that.

The dogs covered the distance quickly.

Catherine’s first instinct was the one she had trained other people not to follow: step back, raise your arms, create motion.
