They Laughed When She Released the Ducks, Until the Harvest Exposed What the Field Had Been Hiding

Chapter 1: The Ducks Entered the Rows While Everyone Watched

The first duck slipped through the gate just as laughter rose behind Rachel Walker.

It was not nervous laughter. It carried cleanly across the field, loud and deliberate, from the cluster of farmers leaning against the boundary fence. Someone slapped a fence post. Another man called out something Rachel could not make out over the rustle of leaves and the excited clucking of the flock.

The duck paused on the packed-earth lane, pale head tilted, as if even it understood that half the valley had come to watch Rachel make a fool of herself.

“Keep them moving,” she told Dennis.

Dennis Harris lifted the hinged panel at the rear of the holding pen. “They’re moving.”

“Not into the lettuce.”

“I know where the lettuce is.”

Rachel did not look at him. She watched the lead duck step between the low woven barriers she had spent four evenings building from willow strips and salvaged wire. One after another, the others followed. Their bodies made a pale, rippling line between the green rows.
