They Ordered Him to Move His Hay Trailer—Then the County Map Showed What His Farm Entrance Was Actually Zoned For

Chapter 1: The Notice Nailed Beside the Hay Gate

The notice was already nailed to Nicholas Wright’s gate when he came down the lane before sunrise.

He saw the white sheet before he saw the men.

It flapped against the weathered oak post beside the cattle gate, held by two bright roofing nails that caught the tractor headlights. Twenty yards beyond it, Nicholas’s hay trailer sat exactly where he had left it the night before: loaded, tarped, and backed onto the faded gravel strip that widened beside the entrance.

Jeffrey Nelson stood beside the trailer with two road-association board members.

Nicholas killed the tractor.

“What’s this?”

Jeffrey held up another copy of the notice. “You need to move the trailer.”

Nicholas looked past him toward the gravel road.
