He Aimed a Floodlight Through My Windows Until the Property Line Cut Through His House

Chapter 1: The Night Christopher Turned Richard’s Windows White

The living room exploded into white light.

Richard Thomas had been standing beside the sofa with a mug in his hand when every window facing the backyard turned into a sheet of glare. The framed photographs on the opposite wall threw hard black shadows. The television vanished beneath the brightness. Even the glass in the cabinet flashed as if someone had opened a furnace door outside.

Coffee jumped over the rim and burned his fingers.

Richard set the mug down carefully.

Beyond the curtains, an engine idled with the low uneven vibration he had learned to recognize through the walls. One of Christopher Walker’s commercial vans. The third white van had arrived that afternoon, nosed through the narrow opening where the new wooden fence ended near the driveways.

Richard had photographed it at 4:17.

He had photographed it again at 6:02 after its rear wheels crossed the orange survey string.

Now, at 9:36, Christopher had added the light.
