My Neighbor Said My Porch Light Was Too Bright—Then the HOA Rule Exposed a Bigger Problem

Chapter 1: The Porch Light That Became a Neighborhood Problem

Karen Mitchell was standing under Stephen Moore’s porch light when he opened the front door.

For half a second, he thought she had come to borrow something. Karen lived next door, and although they were not friends, they had exchanged enough packages and trash-day reminders over the years that seeing her on the porch was not unusual.

What was unusual was the way she stood with her arms folded, her face tilted toward the lantern above her.

“That’s new,” she said.

Stephen looked up.

The brass-colored fixture had been there since he bought the house. The bulb inside it was new. Two nights earlier, the old one had burned out, and he had replaced it with a standard LED from the cabinet above the washing machine.

“The bulb?”

Karen nodded.
