She Planted Sunflowers for One Lost Neighbor, Then the HOA Ordered Every Stem Removed

Chapter 1: The Morning a White Notice Appeared Beneath the Sunflowers

The white paper was clipped to the tallest sunflower as if someone had served legal papers on a plant.

Michelle Walker saw it from her kitchen window at 6:14 in the morning.

For several seconds she stood with one hand around her coffee mug, staring through the glass. The paper lifted and snapped in the breeze between two yellow heads. Its bottom edge struck the stalk again and again.

She knew the logo before she crossed the room.

She set the mug down too hard. Coffee climbed the rim and spread across the counter.

Outside, the grass was damp beneath her sandals. The sunflowers stood along the side-front edge of her lot, beginning near the porch and running toward the corner where the sidewalk curved away. Some were taller than she was. The tallest had opened three days earlier.

The notice was fastened with a black binder clip.

Michelle removed it carefully so she would not scar the stalk.
