She Woke to a Perfect Flower Border—and Learned the Neighborhood Had Already Voted on Her Yard

Chapter 1: The Flowers That Appeared Before Sunrise

Anna Lee opened the blinds and saw three strangers kneeling beneath her window.

For one suspended second, she assumed they were utility workers. Then one of them lifted a tray of orange marigolds, another pressed both hands into a mound of fresh soil, and a third woman stood to admire a ribbon of purple, red, and white flowers running across Anna’s front lawn.

The border had not been there when Anna went to bed.

She stepped closer to the glass. Damp soil formed a dark curve from the sidewalk toward the low wooden divider between her property and the house next door. New plants sat in neat repeating clusters, their leaves still wet from nursery mist. A green watering can rested on the grass beside a stack of empty black trays.

One of the women looked up.

Margaret Baker smiled as though Anna had arrived late to her own surprise party.

She waved through the window.

Anna did not wave back.
