The Night the Yellow Property Notices Fell Across the Magnolia Creek HOA Table

Chapter 1: The Notice Nailed Beside His Mother’s Garden

The yellow notice had been stapled directly over the brass survey marker.

Richard Carter stopped halfway through the gate and stared at it, one hand still holding the thermos he had carried from his kitchen. The paper trembled against the cedar post in the faint morning breeze, bright enough to look almost cheerful among the dark boards and wet tomato leaves.

Behind it, only the rounded edge of the marker remained visible—the small piece of metal his father had polished every spring with an old rag and a drop of machine oil.

Richard set down the thermos.

He did not touch the notice at first. He read it where it hung.
