Chapter 1: The Room They Would Not Open for Ruth

Margaret Hill brought the red stamp down across the application while Ruth Carter’s photograph still lay beside it.

DENIED.

The ink caught the edge of the picture, a narrow red crescent touching Ruth’s gray hair.

Rachel stared at it before she looked at Margaret.

“You stamped the photograph.”

Margaret lifted the stamp as if surprised to find it in her hand. “It was under the form.”

The clubhouse office smelled faintly of lemon polish and burnt coffee. Behind Margaret, a framed plaque listed the Maple Hollow board’s officers in brass lettering. Her own name appeared first. Beneath it hung a smaller wooden sign.

RULES ARE RULES.
