They Laughed at the Retired Woman by the Marsh Until the HOA’s New Foundations Began to Crack

Chapter 1: The Morning the Trucks Crossed the Black Water

The dump truck began backing into the marsh at 6:17 on Monday morning.

Debra Green knew the time because the microwave clock glowed red above the kitchen counter when the first warning beep came through her open bedroom window.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

She was halfway down the hall before she understood what she was hearing.

By the time she reached the back door, a yellow truck was already descending the rough grade beyond the row of mailboxes, its rear wheels sinking into ground that had held six inches of dark water the night before.

“No,” Debra said.
