They Towed Eleven Cars Before Dawn, Then Nancy Found Her Name Beneath the Road

Chapter 1: Eleven Empty Driveways Before the Rain Stopped

The tow chain tightened with a metallic snap just as Ashley Flores came running into the street in pink slippers.

“Wait! That’s my car!”

Her robe flared behind her in the rain. One slipper slid sideways on the black pavement, and she caught herself against the sedan’s rear quarter panel as the tow truck lurched forward. The operator braked, but only long enough to lean out his window.

“Ma’am, step away from the vehicle.”

“My work bag is in there. My son’s booster seat is in there.”

Across the street, Kevin Mitchell stood beneath a golf umbrella with a clipboard tucked against his white shirt. Two more tow trucks idled behind him, amber lights sweeping over mailboxes and wet lawns.

“You received notice,” he said.

Ashley stared at him. “At four in the morning?”
