They Bulldozed Katherine’s Garden for Breaking HOA Rules—Then the Old Boundary Line Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Machine Was Already Inside Her Garden

The excavator bucket rose above Katherine Mitchell’s bean rows carrying a black mass of roots, irrigation tubing, and young zucchini plants.

For one second she did not understand what she was seeing.

Then the bucket swung.

Soil rained from it in heavy clods. A snapped length of green hose slapped against the steel teeth. The plants she had set out six weeks earlier—plants she had covered through two late cold nights with old bedsheets and clothespins—fell into a growing mound beside the fence.

Katherine ran.

“Stop!”

The machine’s engine swallowed her voice.

She crossed the gravel behind her house in work boots she had not tied properly, one lace striking her ankle. The old gate at the end of the drive was shaking against its chain. Beyond it, the excavator had entered through a section of wire fencing that had been folded down toward the garden.
