The Morning a Brick Crossed My Kitchen, I Learned Why the HOA Wanted Our Creek

Chapter 1: The Brick Landed Beside Anna’s Breakfast

The brick came through the kitchen glass before I heard anyone outside.

One second Anna was dragging her spoon through a bowl of cereal, pushing the last blue marshmallow away from the milk. The next, the window beside her burst inward with a crack so violent I felt it in my chest.

Glass sprayed across the table.

Anna screamed.

I reached her before the brick stopped moving.

It struck the tile, bounced once, and rolled beneath a chair while I pulled Anna against me and turned my back to the window. She was barefoot. That was the first thing my mind understood clearly.

Bare feet.

Glass everywhere.
