When My Neighbor Smashed My Mailbox, She Never Expected Me to Ask for the County Map

Chapter 1: The Morning the Mailbox Broke Before Breakfast

The first sledgehammer strike landed before Ruth Mitchell reached the road.

She heard concrete crack, sharp and hollow, then saw a gray chip skip across the asphalt and stop near the toe of her work boot.

Kevin Roberts lifted the hammer again.

“Don’t,” Ruth said.

He swung anyway.

The second blow broke a wedge from the footing beneath her mailbox. The black metal box tipped several inches toward the ditch, its post shuddering. Kevin straightened with both hands on the handle and looked at her as though he had completed a repair she had refused to authorize.

Across the road, a porch door opened.

Ruth noticed that before she noticed Angela.
