They Arrested Him Beside His Wife’s Roses, but the Neighborhood Camera Recorded Everything

Chapter 1: The Water Kept Running After They Handcuffed Him

“Get on your knees. Hands where I can see them.”

Dennis Hall looked from the officer’s drawn pistol to the red garden hose curled around his boots. Water hissed from the metal nozzle, flattening fallen maple leaves against the walkway and running in a thin stream toward the rose bed.

He was still trying to understand why three patrol cars had stopped in front of his house.

“I’m putting it down,” Dennis said.

“Now.”

He released the nozzle. It struck the bricks with a sharp metallic crack, spun once, and continued spraying beneath the lowest branches of a newly planted rose.

Dennis lowered himself carefully. At sixty-eight, his knees did not bend without negotiation. Wet soil soaked through his work pants before he settled beside the white fence.

An officer moved behind him and pulled his wrists together.
