The HOA Tore Apart Her Yard, Then Learned She Had Written the County Rules

Chapter 1: The Excavator Crossed the Red String

The excavator bucket dropped into Catherine Miller’s front yard before she reached the porch.

Its steel teeth struck the gravel bed with a grinding crack, lifted a mouthful of river stone, and swung toward the waiting dump trailer. A length of red boundary string snapped beneath the left track and vanished into the mud.

Catherine stopped halfway down the porch steps.

“Shut it down.”

The operator looked toward Gregory Adams instead of her.

Gregory stood beside the driveway in a white polo shirt, khaki pants, and spotless brown shoes. He held a clipboard against his hip as though he were supervising a landscaping delivery rather than the destruction of someone else’s property.

“Keep going,” he called.

The excavator engine rose again.
