He Was Fined for Leaving Nine Minutes Early, Then He Opened the HOA’s Books

Chapter 1: Four Notices Before the Coffee Turned Cold

Janet Clark stepped into the center of Jonathan Martin’s driveway before he could pull the car door shut.

She held a clipboard against her navy blazer and four white envelopes fanned beneath it. Jonathan still had his keys in one hand and a travel mug in the other. Steam curled from the lid. Across the street, two neighbors in work gloves paused beside a pile of trimmed branches.

“Morning, Jonathan.”

He looked from her face to the envelopes. “You’re blocking my car.”

“This will only take a moment.”

“It already has.”

Janet ignored that. She pulled the first sheet free and held it toward him with the calm efficiency of someone handing over a receipt.

“Trash container visible from the street after collection hours.”
