She Slammed an Eighteen-Thousand-Dollar Repair Bill Down, but the Rust Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Rust Inside the Fresh Break

The garage door was halfway open when Richard Young heard the conversation stop.

One second earlier, the old motorcycle garage had been full of ordinary noise: laughter around the wooden table, the clink of bottles, Scott Harris arguing with two club members about a route for the charity ride next month. The next second, every voice disappeared.

Richard looked up from the bottle in his hand and saw Donna Roberts standing beneath the rising garage door.

She was wearing a bright red suit that looked completely out of place among the oil-stained concrete, hanging tools, and motorcycles lined against the walls. Behind her stood two patrol officers, their expressions neutral but their presence heavy.

Richard did not need anyone to tell him this was not a social visit.

Scott lowered his bottle slowly.

“Richard,” he said quietly, “what’s going on?”

Richard watched Donna step inside.
