They Ended His Federal Career on the Bridge Eighteen Days Before His Pension Vested

Chapter 1: The Two Dates Clipped Beneath the Inspection Report

The termination notice was still warm from the printer when Michael Garcia read it for the third time.

The river below him moved so fast that the water looked like a sheet of broken glass, forcing itself between the dark walls of the gorge. The suspension bridge trembled lightly beneath his boots as wind moved through the cables. He had spent nineteen years learning the difference between normal movement and dangerous movement.

This movement was normal.

The document in his hand was not.

Michael stood near the center of the bridge with his federal field jacket zipped against the cold and his inspection clipboard pressed against the metal railing. A bridge sensor report was clipped on top. Beneath it sat two papers that suddenly seemed heavier than the equipment bag at his feet.

One was the notice ending his employment.

The other was his pension schedule.

Christine Davis stood several steps away, her red coat bright against the gray steel and dark forest surrounding them. She looked uncomfortable, but not uncertain. She had practiced this conversation.
