The HOA Fined Him for a Gate That Had Been Legal Longer Than Their Neighborhood Existed

Chapter 1: The Morning They Came for the Gate

The contractor truck stopped directly in front of Samuel Miller’s gate at 8:07 on Saturday morning.

It was white, unmarked except for a magnetic company sign on the door, and carried an angle grinder, extension cords, and two lengths of chain in the open bed.

Samuel stood behind the steel bars with his coffee in one hand.

Brenda Clark climbed out of her SUV carrying a clipboard.

That was when he understood they had not come to talk.

“Morning, Samuel.”

“You brought a contractor.”

Brenda looked toward the gate instead of answering. The property manager stepped out behind her with a rolled site plan tucked under one arm.
