Christine Carter walked toward me with a white envelope while the leaf blower was still running.

I saw the envelope before I saw her expression.

I released the trigger, and the blower wound down with a long mechanical sigh. Dry maple leaves settled against the curb between us. Across the street, two HOA board members stood near Christine’s driveway with folders tucked against their chests, waiting for whatever came next.

“Frank,” Christine said, “do you have a minute?”

I set the blower beside my toolbox.

“I guess I do now.”

Her smile tightened.
