The HOA Hired Him to Fix an Overgrown Yard—Then He Arrived and Found the Wrong Property Perfectly Maintained

Chapter 1: The Yard George Was Supposed to Rescue

George Miller had one wheel of the commercial mower on the driveway when he realized there was nowhere to use it.

He stopped with both hands on the handle.

The photograph on his phone showed waist-high weeds crowding a wooden fence, ragged grass swallowing the edge of a narrow walkway, and two volunteer saplings bending over what looked like an air-conditioning unit. George had studied that photograph the night before until he could practically trace the job with his finger.

Cut the grass down in stages. Clear the fence line. Remove woody growth. Edge the concrete. Haul debris.

Three hours if things went well. Four if the wet growth clogged the deck.

The yard in front of him needed none of it.

A clean strip of green ran between the beige house and a recently stained privacy fence. The lawn had been cut within days, perhaps sooner. The edge along the concrete was sharp enough to make George look down at his own boots, as though he had somehow stepped onto the wrong property without noticing.

He checked the house number.
