The HOA Took Her Two Deeded Parking Spaces—Then One Saturday Forced Everyone to Read the Fine Print

Chapter 1: The Saturday Her Parking Space Vanished

Sarah Lewis slowed so sharply at the entrance to Maplewood Commons that the grocery bags on her passenger seat tipped forward.

Two unfamiliar vehicles sat in spaces 14 and 15.

A silver SUV occupied 14, the spot directly across from her front walkway. A dark sedan filled 15 beside it. Beyond them, the clubhouse doors stood open while people carried foil-covered trays, folding chairs, and balloons inside.

Sarah kept her foot on the brake.

It was not the first time someone had taken one of her spaces. For the past several Saturdays, she had returned from errands to find a visitor parked there. Usually one space remained open. She would use it, tell herself the problem was temporary, and wait for the offending car to leave.

Today both were taken.

She drove past them and found an unmarked space near the far end of the lot.

By the time she carried her groceries back, the handles had cut red lines into her fingers. A family crossed in front of her from the clubhouse, laughing as a child dragged a balloon along the pavement.
