The Morning Our Book Box Vanished, I Learned Why My Neighbor Needed Everyone to Blame Me

Chapter 1: The Yellow Marker Beside My Wife’s Book Box

Christine Campbell drove a yellow violation marker into my lawn while a little girl still had one hand inside the book box.

The child froze with a paperback halfway through the opening. Her mother, standing beside a stroller on the sidewalk, looked from Christine to me as if she had accidentally walked into the middle of an argument already in progress.

“Go ahead,” I told the girl.

Christine straightened. She wore a white polo with the neighborhood association emblem stitched near the collar and held a thin folder against her hip. Two people stood several yards behind her, both from the architectural-review committee. I knew their faces from annual meetings. I had never seen either of them inspect my property.

The girl slid the paperback into the lower shelf.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Her mother guided her away.

Christine waited until they were out of earshot.
