The Lights She Forced Us to Remove Were the Ones Keeping Our Street Visible

Chapter 1: The Woman Pointing at the Lights in March

“You need to take those down.”

Virginia Davis stood at the edge of Robert Miller’s driveway with one arm raised toward the porch eaves, her index finger fixed on the line of red, blue, amber, and green bulbs above his head.

Robert looked up at them, then down at the white coffee mug in his hand.

“It’s March,” she added.

Across the street, a garage door had stopped halfway open. A man pretending to rearrange recycling bins was no longer pretending very well. Two houses down, someone paused beside a mailbox.

Robert took a sip.

“They’re not holiday lights.”

Virginia’s mouth tightened. She wore the navy jacket she favored for HOA business, though Robert knew there was no scheduled inspection that afternoon. Beside her stood the property manager with a folder tucked under one arm and the uncomfortable expression of a person who had expected an email exchange, not an audience.
