She Tried to Save the Neighborhood Pond Before One Man Buried the Truth Beneath It

Chapter 1: The Red Marker Beside the Koi Pond

The first load of gravel struck the water while the fish were still beneath it.

Lisa Mitchell heard the splash from her kitchen and ran through the back door without stopping for shoes. By the time she reached the fence line, the skid steer’s bucket was rising again, wet stones sliding from its steel lip. The pond had gone cloudy. Orange backs flashed under the surface, then vanished into the brown churn.

“Brian!”

He looked over from the cab but did not shut off the engine.

The machine’s diesel growl filled the narrow space between their houses. Two neighbors stood near the sidewalk, watching through the gap beside Brian’s garage. One held a phone at chest height. Neither stepped closer.

Brian Roberts lowered the bucket and called over the motor, “Stay on your side, Lisa.”

“This is my side of the drainage corridor.”

“It’s my property.”
