The Check Bounced While Her Grandfather Was Dying, Then One Wrong Date Exposed the HOA

Chapter 1: The Check Failed Before the Nurse Could Finish Speaking

“The payment didn’t go through.”

Rachel Wilson tightened her hand around her grandfather’s before the hospice nurse could finish the sentence.

Edward’s fingers lay cool and dry against hers. A pulse monitor clicked softly beside the bed, steady enough to be reassuring if Rachel did not look at the oxygen tubing beneath his nose or the gray hollows under his cheekbones.

“I’m sorry,” the nurse said. “Billing tried the card twice. They asked me to let you know before the medication delivery is released.”

Rachel stared at her.

“What payment?”

“The supplemental hospice account. The one listed for home-transition services.”

For a moment Rachel heard only the mechanical breath of the oxygen line.
