Chapter 1: Thirty Minutes Through a Wall That Never Truly Went Quiet

The pounding came through the wall before Daniel Moore finished the first phrase.

Three hard blows.

Not a neighborly knock. Not plumbing. A fist against drywall.

Daniel lowered the trumpet, but the last note seemed to remain in the room, caught somewhere between the bookcase and the narrow wall he shared with Unit 4B. On the music stand, his phone timer kept counting down.

27:43.

He stared at it for one second too long.

Then a baby began crying next door.

Daniel closed his eyes.
