“Turn that thing off!”

Thomas Davis was halfway down the stairs when Margaret Wilson shouted again from somewhere beyond his front door.

“It’s waking up the entire neighborhood!”

The digital clock on the microwave read 1:57 a.m.

Thomas stopped in the dark kitchen, one hand on the counter. For a second he listened past the pounding in his chest. The house was quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator and, from the back of the property, the faint two-note chime that had pulled him out of bed.

Not an alarm.

Two short tones. Then silence.

He opened the front door.
