The Lakeside Repair They Ordered Removed Was The Same Structure Protecting Their Entire Community

Chapter 1: The Quiet Dock Before The Rules Arrived

The first thing Frank Mitchell noticed was not the crack.

It was the way the dock moved when there was no wind.

He stood at the end of the wooden walkway with one hand resting on the railing, watching the calm surface of the lake barely ripple beneath the boards. The water looked exactly as it had for years—flat, quiet, almost untouched by time.

But the dock was different.

A few feet below him, one of the support beams shifted with a slow, uneven movement. Not enough for someone passing by to notice. Not enough to make noise. Just enough for Frank to feel it through the soles of his boots.

He stepped back and looked down through the gaps between the boards.

The support post closest to the shoreline had a fresh split running along its side.

Frank lowered his white ceramic mug onto the railing and crouched.
