The Morning They Called Ruth’s Safety Light Ugly, She Stopped Protecting Them From the Truth

Chapter 1: The Yellow Notice Covered the Light Dennis Built

The yellow paper appeared before Ruth knew anyone was standing outside.

It covered the center of the storm door, bright enough to show through the frosted glass, its black block letters cutting across the pale morning like a warning sign. Behind it, the small white strobe beside the frame flashed twice.

Someone had pressed the doorbell.

Ruth set down her coffee and crossed the kitchen without hurrying. Through the narrow uncovered edge of glass, she saw Jessica Clark on the porch in a navy blazer, one hand wrapped around a plastic cup of iced coffee. Susan Lee stood a step behind her holding a clipboard and a phone.

Jessica pressed the bell again.

The strobe pulsed against the yellow notice.

Ruth unlocked the inner door but left the storm door closed.

Jessica lifted the clipboard so Ruth could see it. “Good morning.”
