The Orange Cord Across Her Lawn Exposed More Than a Neighbor’s Stolen Electricity

Chapter 1: The Cord That Crossed the Flower Bed

The orange cord was alive.

Mary Davis knew it before she touched it because the thin black shadow beneath it trembled against the wet mulch. Somewhere beyond the hedge, a power tool rose into a hard metallic whine, and the cord tightened across her flower bed as if something on the other end had pulled it taut.

She stopped halfway down the back steps, coffee warming both hands.

The cord entered her yard beneath the lowest rail of the shared fence, crossed a row of flattened marigolds, and disappeared into the weatherproof outlet mounted beside her garage door. The outlet cover hung open.

Mary set her coffee on the step.

For several seconds, she simply looked.

Her first instinct was not anger. It was inventory.

The outlet cover had no visible cracks. The plug was orange, heavy-duty, and clean except for a strip of gray concrete dust near the connector. The cord crossed approximately twenty feet of her property. Two flower stems were bent. One sprinkler head had been pressed sideways into the soil.
