The HOA Ordered Him to Remove His Father’s Dish, Then Every Router on the Street Went Dark

Chapter 1: The Notice Beneath the Front Door

The envelope lay half inside the foyer, its corner trembling each time the air conditioner came on.

Kevin Torres noticed it only because he nearly stepped on it while carrying a bowl of cut fruit toward the living room. The paper was heavy, cream-colored, and stamped with the green crest of Ridgecrest Meadows Homeowners Association. Across the front, in block letters, someone had written: HAND DELIVERED.

From the next room, Frank shouted, “That’s interference!”

The television crowd roared. Kevin looked through the doorway and saw his father leaning forward in the recliner, one fist raised, the clear oxygen tube looped beneath his nose. Blue light from the football broadcast flickered across his cheeks.

“You say that every time Carolina drops a pass,” Kevin called.

“Because every time Carolina drops a pass, somebody interfered.”

Kevin set the bowl on the side table, then returned to the envelope.

The notice inside began with VIOLATION OF ARCHITECTURAL STANDARDS.
