The HOA Called Her Garden Illegal Until Its False Court Notice Reached the Wrong Kitchen Table

Chapter 1: The Gold Seal Above the Tomatoes

The word FORECLOSURE sat beneath a gold seal as if someone had pressed it into the page hard enough to bruise the paper.

Kathleen Roberts stood beside her kitchen table with the certified envelope still in one hand and the letter trembling in the other. Her coffee had gone untouched. Through the open back door, three raised beds caught the late-August sun, tomato vines leaning against wire cages and rosemary spilling over one cedar edge.

She read the first paragraph again.

The Sycamore Ridge Homeowners Tribunal had found her in violation of community standards governing unauthorized agricultural activity. She owed four thousand two hundred dollars. Payment was due within seven business days. Failure to comply could result in collection proceedings, a lien, and eventual foreclosure.

Kathleen stopped at that word every time.

The mortgage had been paid off twelve years earlier. She still remembered the evening she and her husband had opened the bank’s final letter at this same table. He had lifted his coffee cup and said, “Now the house belongs to us instead of the calendar.”

The letter in her hand seemed to disagree.

She set it down carefully, aligning its lower edge with the table seam. Thirty-two years in public-school libraries had taught her that disorder often hid missing information. A crooked stack made a lost page easier to overlook. A smudged date could change an entire record.
