The Road They Blocked Had Carried Three Generations Home Before the HOA Arrived

Chapter 1: Three Concrete Planters Across the Only Road Home

Jerry Miller saw the first concrete planter before the truck finished rounding the bend.

He lifted his boot from the accelerator and let the empty log trailer drag the rig down to a crawl. Two more planters came into view behind the first, gray blocks set shoulder to shoulder across the road. Fresh concrete dust lay pale against the dark gravel. Somebody had placed young cedar shrubs in the tops, as though greenery could make three tons of obstruction look neighborly.

Jerry stopped fifteen feet short of them.

Beyond the barriers, Forest Ridge’s new electronic gate stood open. The black steel arms had been installed where the old timber gate once hung. Through the gap, the road climbed between newly built homes with steep roofs, broad windows, and porch lights still glowing in the morning shade.

A yellow school bus waited on the subdivision side.

Parents stood near the mail kiosk with children in bright jackets. Several had their phones raised before Jerry opened his door.

He shut off the engine.

The silence after the diesel stopped seemed to make the truck larger. Its empty stakes rose above the road like a cage. Jerry climbed down carefully, feeling grit shift beneath his boots.
