They Called Her the Clubhouse Help Until Her Mother’s Survey Reached the HOA Table

Chapter 1: The Woman Nicole Ordered to Stack the Chairs

“Carolyn, before you sit down, would you straighten those chairs?”

Nicole Harris pointed across the clubhouse as if Carolyn had been waiting for instructions. Her voice carried easily over the low talk of nearly forty homeowners finding seats for the monthly Maple Court meeting.

Three folding chairs stood crooked beside the rear wall. Carolyn had not touched them. She was holding a brown folder against her ribs, one hand pressed over its bent top edge.

Nicole gave her a bright, practiced smile.

“You know how everyone leaves things,” she added. “Since you’re already here.”

The room did not go silent. That would have been easier. Instead, conversations thinned into careful murmurs. Several residents looked at Carolyn, then quickly down at their agendas.

Carolyn felt the broken rose cutting shift inside the folder.

“I’m here to speak during homeowner comments,” she said.
