The HOA Brought an Excavator for the Hill, but Scott Knew What Their Maps Had Erased

Chapter 1: The Excavator Arrived Before the Neighbors Woke

The excavator bucket swung over the grassy rise just as Scott Adams stepped beneath it.

The operator stopped the machine so sharply that the bucket rocked on its hydraulic arm. Diesel fumes drifted across the common lawn, mixing with the smell of cut grass and damp soil. Scott stood with both hands visible at his sides, his boots planted between two orange survey flags.

“Back away from the equipment,” Elizabeth Roberts called.

She crossed the lawn in a navy windbreaker with an HOA clipboard tucked against her chest. Behind her, Brian Jackson spoke quietly to three residents who had come out in slippers and jackets to watch. More faces appeared in windows along the curved street.

Scott looked up at the suspended bucket. Its steel teeth were clean.

“They haven’t touched the ground yet,” he said. “That’s why I’m here.”

Elizabeth stopped several yards away. “The contractor has county approval. The board gave notice. You had thirty days to submit an objection.”

“I submitted three.”
