My Neighbor Built His Perfect Backyard on My Land, but Moving the Fence Cost Us Both

Chapter 1: The Fence Was Waiting Before the Welcome

The first cedar panel came loose with a dry crack.

Richard Walker stood at the edge of his patio while two workers lifted it free, exposing a raw strip of earth where Gary Campbell’s fence had stood for years. Beyond them, Gary watched with both hands buried in his jacket pockets. He did not look at Richard.

A bright survey stake remained in the ground between them.

Four weeks earlier, Richard had arrived with a rented trailer, six cardboard boxes, and no reason to think the fence would become the first thing in the neighborhood to know his name.

The subdivision looked ordinary enough. Detached houses sat behind trimmed lawns and ornamental trees. Mailboxes matched. Driveways curved in nearly identical arcs. A bronze plaque at the entrance announced Willow Creek Estates above a bed of red mulch.

Richard had carried his second box through the front door when a voice called from the neighboring porch.

“You buy without walking the lines?”

The man speaking was broad through the shoulders, with silver beginning at his temples and a coffee mug balanced against his stomach. A woman stood a few feet behind him, one hand resting on the porch rail.
