My Neighbor Cut Down the Trees Between Our Homes, Then Used the HOA to Make Me Look Guilty

Chapter 1: The Morning the Lake Appeared Through My Trees

The chainsaw stopped the moment Andrew Campbell stepped onto the slope.

For half a second, the silence was worse.

Then a branch rolled through torn leaves below him, struck a stump, and settled with a dry crack.

Andrew stood at the edge of what had been shade.

Yesterday, the lower half of his property had been dense with oak, hickory, and maple. The trees had screened the houses uphill, softened the noise from the road, and turned the lake beyond them into flashes of silver between trunks.

Now the lake was simply there.

Wide. Bright. Exposed.

Andrew could see it through a raw corridor of missing trees.
