The Orange Lock on Jacob Carter’s Door Hid a Debt No Neighbor Was Allowed to See

Chapter 1: The Orange Lock Across Jacob’s Front Door

Metal struck the front door hard enough to rattle the framed photograph in Jacob Carter’s hallway.

He stopped halfway through buttoning his work shirt.

A second scrape followed, slower this time, metal dragging over painted wood. Then came the click of something heavy closing.

Jacob crossed the living room and pulled the door inward.

It moved less than two inches.

Through the narrow opening, he saw a length of bright orange steel stretched across the exterior security latch. A thick padlock joined the two ends. Beyond it stood Catherine Hall in a beige jacket, one hand holding a clipboard and the other resting on the lock as though she had just installed a new mailbox.

“You have until Friday,” she said.

Jacob stared at the orange bar. “Take that off my door.”
