They Locked the Only Alley to His Bakery, but the Old Flour Ledger Held More Than Delivery Records

Chapter 1: The Gate Was Locked Before the Ovens Cooled

The chain struck the truck’s front bumper with a hard metallic snap.

Robert heard it through his phone before Nicholas said a word.

“I’m in the alley,” Nicholas said. His voice was low and tight. “There’s a gate here.”

Robert stood beside the proofing racks with one hand still inside an oven mitt. Behind him, the morning baker slid trays of rolls toward the cooling table. The exhaust fans hummed. A timer began to chirp.

“What gate?”

“A steel one. Across the whole lane.”

Robert pulled off the mitt and walked toward the loading door. “Is it open?”

“The chain just hit the truck.”
