He Told the Gray-Shirted Neighbor to Use the Service Gate—Then the HOA Needed His Records

Chapter 1: The Man Beside the Gate Cabinet

“Contractors are supposed to come in through the service entrance.”

Stephen Wilson looked up from the open metal cabinet beside the clubhouse walkway.

The man speaking stood three feet away in a navy sport coat, one hand holding a phone and the other pointing toward the narrow driveway behind the clubhouse. Beyond him, two catering workers were carrying covered trays toward the patio, and homeowners were beginning to arrive for the annual meeting.

Stephen pushed his reading glasses higher on his nose.

“I’m not a contractor.”

Jason King glanced at the faded gray work shirt, Stephen’s scuffed shoes, and the worn canvas tool bag open on the concrete beside him.

“Whatever company you’re with, this area has to be cleared before six.”

Stephen turned back toward the cabinet.
