They Called My Family Dock a Shared Amenity Until I Found the Amendment They Never Wanted Read

Chapter 1: The Saturday They Told Me My Dock Wasn’t Mine

The first thing I saw was smoke rising beside my father’s fishing bench.

Not lake mist. Not somebody’s outboard coughing at the marina.

Charcoal smoke.

A man I barely recognized stood on my dock with metal tongs in one hand, turning burgers over a portable grill set three feet from the bench Samuel Davis had built when Emma was still small enough to swing her legs without touching the deck boards.

Two boats were tied alongside him.

Neither belonged to me.

I stopped halfway down the slope from the house.

“Can I help you?”
