They Tore Down His Old Farm Wall Before Sunrise—Then the First Hard Rain Exposed What It Had Been Protecting

Chapter 1: The Wall Came Down Before the Sun Reached the Pasture

The excavator bucket hit the wall before Jonathan Harris reached the bottom of the lane.

Stone cracked against steel in the gray light before sunrise. A section of fieldstone that had stood longer than Jonathan had been alive folded inward, and three heavy rocks rolled into the pasture grass.

Jonathan stopped his truck crooked across the gravel, left the door open, and walked toward the machine.

The operator saw him and lifted the bucket.

“Shut it down.”

The diesel engine dropped to an idle.

Cynthia Roberts stood beside a pickup near the lane, coffee in one hand and a fluorescent vest pulled over her jacket. Two cooperative board members were farther back near a trailer loaded with culvert pipe.

Jonathan looked from Cynthia to the broken wall.
