They Arrested an Aging Farmer Over a Gun Threat, but the Irrigation Line Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Deputies Arrived While the Water Was Still Running

“Get on the ground! Hands where I can see them!”

Kevin Martin froze with one boot sunk ankle-deep in mud.

The irrigation pump thudded behind him, steady and mechanical, pushing water through the yellow hose that ran from the ditch to the lower field. In his right hand he held a long black irrigation wand. Water still streamed from its end, cutting a shallow groove through the soil.

Two sheriff’s deputies stood near the county road with their hands close to their holsters.

Kevin looked from them to the wand.

“You mean me?”

“Drop it.”

He let the wand fall.
