My HOA Treated My Garage Like Free Storage Until I Put a Price on Every Day

Chapter 1: The Mower That Wasn’t Mine

The first thing Joseph Baker saw when he raised his garage door was a commercial aerator sitting where the front half of his car was supposed to go.

He stopped with one hand still on the remote.

Behind the aerator stood two walk-behind mowers, three backpack blowers, a pressure washer, and the tongue of a black utility trailer angled through the side bay. Dried grass clung to the mower decks. Mud had fallen in half-moons across the concrete floor.

None of it belonged to him.

Joseph looked toward the service lane behind his property. A landscaping truck rolled slowly past the hedge, its amber light blinking. The logo on the door belonged to Gregory Clark’s company—the same company that maintained the common lawns, entrance beds, and clubhouse grounds for the homeowners association.

Joseph stepped inside.

The heavy padlock that normally hung through the latch on the side door was open. It dangled from the hasp like someone had started a job and forgotten to finish it.

“Morning.”
