They Locked the Only Road Across His Farm, Then Learned Who Actually Owned the Ground Beneath It

Chapter 1: The Gate That Wasn’t There Yesterday

The gate had not been there Sunday night.

William Carter stopped his pickup twenty feet short of it Monday morning and left the engine running while he stared through the windshield.

Fresh galvanized steel crossed the gravel road from ditch to ditch. A new chain looped around the post on the far side, and a brass-colored padlock hung where William had driven through for more than forty years without asking anyone’s permission.

Beyond it, the road climbed past his south pasture toward the twelve newer houses scattered along the ridge.

William shut off the truck.

The sudden silence made the gate seem even more ridiculous.

He got out slowly, more irritated by the assumption behind it than by the obstacle itself. The gravel beneath his boots had been recently spread and rolled. Tire tracks from heavy equipment cut across the shoulder. Someone had trimmed brush back along his fence and shoved the branches into a low pile near the ditch.

Three men stood beyond the gate.
