They Filed a Lien Against Her Farm Gate—Then She Read the Road Association’s Own Records

Chapter 1: The Lien Was Clipped to Her Farm Gate

The paper had been clipped to the farm gate with a black binder clip, just above the chain Janet Hall used every night.

She saw it from the cab of her pickup before she saw the truck beyond it.

At first she thought it was another delivery notice. Then she read the first line through the windshield and stopped with one boot still on the running board.

The words were large enough to read from six feet away.

Janet stood in the gravel with the morning feed sack still in the truck bed and read the page twice. The private road-maintenance association claimed she owed an emergency assessment, administrative charges, and enforcement costs. Until those amounts were paid, the association asserted a lien against her farm parcel.

Below that was a second notice.
