He Chained My Farm Gate Shut, So I Let Eleven Mornings Tell the Truth

Chapter 1: The Chain Was on Larry’s Gate

The padlock was new.

Larry Carter knew that before he was close enough to touch it.

At 5:57 on Monday morning, his truck headlights washed across the metal farm gate at the end of the gravel lane, catching a bright brass body where his old black lock should have been. A heavier chain had been looped twice through the gate and the cedar post.

Larry stopped twenty feet short.

Beyond the gate, his pickup sat where he had left it the night before, nose toward the road, boxed in by the gate in front and a forty-foot RV angled across the lane behind it.

For thirty years, Larry had opened that gate before daylight without thinking.

That morning, somebody else had decided he could not.

He got out slowly.
