He Paid for the Farm Road for Twenty-Seven Years—Then the Cooperative Locked His Gate

Chapter 1: The Gate Was Chained Before the Hay Wagon Arrived

James Carter saw the chain before he saw Margaret Anderson.

It hung through the bars of the old iron gate in two bright loops, pulled tight around the post beside the cooperative bridge. Beyond it, the gravel connector ran straight across the creek and climbed toward the county road.

James eased off the tractor throttle.

Behind him, the hay wagon settled with a wooden groan under four high rows of square bales. He had loaded before sunrise because the buyer’s truck was supposed to meet him at the north field entrance by nine. The cooperative road cut nearly four miles from the alternative route and, more important, kept the wagon off the soft bottom ground behind his cattle pasture.

He stopped ten feet short of the gate.

Margaret stood on the other side with a clipboard tucked beneath one arm.

“You can’t bring that across.”

James looked at the bridge, then at her.
